Two years ago, I was introduced - REALLY introduced - to soccer for the first time... it was as though the world finally made sense.
I was taught the game by an Englishman, so it's often difficult for me to not call it football. In my heart and in my head, that's what the game is. The game. For the LOVE of the game. This beautiful sport. I get tingly when I see a clever midfielder find his perfect space to make a brilliant cross; the final touch from a powerful forward as the ball arches into the net sends me to my feet; the passionate drive of an intelligent defender executing a brilliant tackle makes my heart thump; and perhaps my favorite, a keeper flying off his line, stopping the unstoppable shot makes me feel as though I'm a teenager in love all over again. This beautiful, beautiful game - played for centuries, perfected by masters, played in the streets by youth across the world - this is where my heart and passion lie.
Both of my boys have played soccer for the past 5 years, but no one ever really took the time to explain the game to me until Shane. Since that fateful summer of 2012, I have dived straight into the area (har har) and am blessed beyond words to not only watch my boys play, but to also be the photographer for Texas Strikers and Gusher United.
This spring, Liverpool Football Club America incorporated Gusher United into its fold. How AMAZING! Liverpool, while not my personal Premiere League club of choice, is a BIG club, and this is an amazing opportunity for kids in Southeast Texas - one that was never an option for me when I rebelled against American Football as a 12 year old.
Not only has Liverpool FCA pushed against the Texas "Friday Night Lights" stereotype, but they're GROWING and EXPANDING across the United States! Perhaps big clubs from the UK will see LFCA's model and come on over! Maybe in 8 years USA will be a genuine threat to win the World Cup?!
In the meantime, Gusher Families, please enjoy the images from some of the events I attended at Gusher this season. I have priced them so that hopefully everyone will be able to afford at least one print of their little (or big!) guy or gal getting some touches on the ball.
